R is for Resting
Resting, an important element of the dance, too
R is for rocking shimmy
This is one of the 'old trusty' shimmy family. To learn, start in default position, keep relaxed and allow your hips to rock side to side. Legs act as shockabsorbers - in a backward forward action (as if you are running a marathon without moving your feet). If you are wearing a coinbelt, the aim is to make those coins sing "chunka, chnka, chunka, chunka" rather than chinklechinkle or tshtshtsh. Ideally your upper body will remain still & relaxed. With practice, you will find you could shimmy a marathon, it powers itself! When practiced, it can also be layered with other movements, stepping, slides, eights, height changes, weight transfers.
